What is Boba Tea?
Boba Tea and Origin
Boba Tea originated from Taiwan in the 1980s. When Boba was first created it was intended to be used in ice desserts matched with sweet syrups and sticky rice balls. But now it's mainly used to be matched with a smooth tea. Technically, Boba is cassava starch balls that sit at the bottom of your drink. It uniquely adds texture to any drink. Which makes for a unique and delicious treat. The most traditional Boba Tea is a tapioca pearls sweetened with honey matched with a smooth and creamy black tea.
Boba Tea Now
People use the word Boba Tea to now refer to a broad category of chunky drinks. Boba tea is also commonly referred to as bubble tea or pearl tea. Boba now is just any small pearl or small chunks of something that sits at the bottom of a drink, that you use a fatter straw to suck up, and typically has a sealed lid.
